BOTOX INJECTIONS & DERMAL FILLERS
Are Botox Injections Right for Me?
Neuromodulators such as Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) are very popular and effective ways to reduce signs of aging around the face and neck. The treatments are designed to temporarily relax overactive facial muscles. This results in smoother looking skin with fewer wrinkles and fine lines.
Andy Courson, M.D. of the Houston Center for Facial Plastic Surgery-Kingwood provides the FDA approved and clinically proven effective Botox and Dysport injections services to interested patients.
Understanding Botox & How It Works
Botox and Dysport belong to a category of medications known as neuromodulators. Specifically, Botox and Dysport are purified neurotoxins that work to inhibit the contraction of muscles. These are administered via careful and skillful injection to targeted areas to cause a temporary relaxation of muscle activity. These medications are some of the most studied over the past 25 years. In addition to their cosmetic applications, they have clinical uses in the treatment of headaches, muscle spams, excessive sweating, and overactive bladder to name a few.
Which type of Botox is right for me?
There are several different formulations of neurotoxins that have been studied and used clinically over the past few decades. Currently, Botox and Dysport are the most commonly used, with Xeomin as another toxin on the market. Botox and Dysport are slightly different chemical substances that both result in the temporary relaxation of the targeted muscles. Some feel that Dysport works a bit faster than Botox and lasts slightly longer. However, this has not been consistently proven by research. Overall, both medications work well and it is patient preference that determines which one is used.

JUVÉDERM® is a smooth dermal filler injectable gel that helps to immediately restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds— are the creases that go from the bottom of the nose and come around the corners of the mouth). It adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance to the face. JUVÉDERM® comes in three formulations—JUVÉDERM® Ultra and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus and JUVÉDERM® Voluma. JUVÉDERM® is generally used for injection into the mid to deep dermis for correction of moderate to deep facial folds and wrinkles.
As we age, our skin changes. Over time, natural youthful skin volume begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. But with JUVÉDERM®, this natural process can slow down considerably.
A typical treatment only takes about 15 minutes, and results are immediate. Plus, JUVÉDERM® now has lidocaine in the syringes for patient comfort. Moreover, downtime is minimal with this procedure. And now with the newest formulations of JUVÉDERM®, the effects of lidocaine take place in seconds, potentially reducing the need for further anesthetic.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® offer an effective, safe, nonsurgical option for smoothing facial wrinkles and folds. In fact, they are the fastest growing nonsurgical aesthetic procedure in the U.S., according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Each dermal filler is not the same. JUVÉDERM® ultra and ultra plus are FDA approved to last up to 1 year, and JUVEDERM Voluma can last up to 18 months. The unique manufacturing process provides a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid for long-lasting results. It also creates a smooth consistency gel that easily injects into the skin to give skin a smooth, natural look and feel, so everyone will notice- but no one will know!
JUVÉDERM® is a “next-generation” dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in the body that is responsible for hydrating your skin and replenishing its natural volume. No allergy skin tests are needed prior to receiving treatment.
Dr. Courson will examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the depth of wrinkles and folds to determine your treatment. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is available in 2 formulas—JUVÉDERM® Ultra for contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds, and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, for volumizing and correcting deeper wrinkles. After consulting with Dr. Courson, he will tailor the treatment formula to your unique skincare needs.
Although anesthesia is not required, Dr. Courson uses topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the treatment area first. He will ease the JUVÉDERM® injectable gel under your skin to augment, or fill, wrinkles and folds. Following the injection, he gently massages the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy. The injection itself usually takes between 15 to 20 minutes.
With JUVÉDERM®, there is minimal recovery or downtime. For the first 24 hours after treatment, patients are encouraged to avoid strenuous exercise, excessive exposure to sun and heat, and consumption of alcoholic beverages to help minimize the risks of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at treatment sites. After the injections, certain temporary treatment-site reactions may occur, including redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own after 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, freely apply an ice pack for a brief period. Makeup can generally be applied immediately after the treatment.
You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal smoothing and diminished wrinkling. However, results can vary and treatments are temporary. Supplemental “touch up” treatments are often required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

Restylane, Restylane Silk & Perlane
Restylane®, Restylane Silk®, and Perlane® are cosmetic dermal fillers that add volume within the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin which provides fullness and elasticity. Over time, your body’s hyaluronic acid diminishes, causing your skin to lose volume and increasing the chances for wrinkles and folds to appear.
These three dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid. Perlane’s gel particles are larger, as they are designed to be injected deeper into the skin. Restylane® is the world’s best-selling dermal filler because it’s well tolerated, safe, non-surgical, and can typically last up to 6 months. Both provide rejuvenating cosmetic beauty treatments for a natural, younger-looking you.
Restylane®, Restylane Silk®, and Perlane® are FDA–approved for the treatment of fine, moderate, and severe facial wrinkles and folds.
There’s no stopping the aging process. But the good news is, there’s something you can do to slow it down.
